Traditions & Wedding Customs
Filipinos are known to be conservative and devoted Roman Catholics. It is strongly evidenced by our traditions that up to know are practised in different regions of the country.
In this modern era, Cebuanos are proud to say that wedding traditions are still alive. The formal marriage proposal is done through “pamalaye” or “pamamanhikan” in Tagalog. The man and his family will visit the woman’s home with foods, wine and gifts to offer. Then, the two families will discuss the wedding plans including wedding date, venue, budget and guests to be invited. Likewise, this is the chance for the parents to be acquainted and establish a good relationship as in-laws.
“Pamamanhikan” To add more, marrying couples are not allowed to travel or go out of the house before the wedding day to prevent accidents. Also, siblings should not marry on the same year to avoid bad luck. Apart from that, the bride should not wear her wedding gown before the wedding day or else the wedding will not push through. All these are considered superstitious but as the old saying goes “there is no harm believing.”Last 2007, the Cebu Archdiocese released a new wedding guidelines that will be strictly implemented to avoid the unnecessary wedding parts initiated by wedding planners. This means that wedding ceremonies should only be held in parishes under the Archdiocese of Cebu. Outdoor weddings like underwater weddings, hotel or garden weddings are not allowed. Also, couples are not allowed to write their own vows as well as playing of popular music during the ceremony. Backless and sleeveless bridal gowns with slit are likewise prohibited. Although there are others who do not agree with these guidelines, church wedding is the best venue to start another milestone in your lives together and receive the holy matrimony in front of Christ.
